Development Centers

The three initial centers established for the Ondo Youth Development Initiative are:

  1. A comprehensive & integrated industrial tailoring unit on the Akure-Ondo road at Fesolas to produce various items like: bed sheets and pillow cases, female slips, singlets, drapes, throw pillows, duvets, aso-oke utilization, fishing nets, mosquito nets, uniforms, table cloths, dinner sets, etc.
  2. A wood fabrication yard on the Akure-Ondo road at Fesolas to produce items such as wooden louvers, sliding windows, wooden floor tiles, wooden patios, wooden huts, rulers, drawing boards, gazebos, pool tables, D.I.Y. furniture, ladders, crates, etc.
  3. An integrated metal fabrication center at Awoyaya after Oka on the Ondo–Ore  road to produce items like hoes, nails, cutlasses, rakes, shovels, garden forks, axes, metal doors, roller shutters, wheel barrows, pull carts, fences, metal furniture and small spare parts.

In consultation with the trade cooperatives, various machines were purchased to start off the centers while the very huge press metal machines at the Metal Center were refurbished and made functional. All required infrastructure were put in place including a 6km overhead power line from Oka to Awoyaya with a 500KVA transformer donated by Ondo West Local Government, a 60KVA generator, the extension of power to Fesolas, provision of a 27KVA generator etc.

The installation of the listed infrastructure was made possible by donations received from friends and disbursed through the Ondo Development Committee (ODC). The major donors were Nigerian Agip Exploration limited (NAE) with a donation of N 2.5 million; Century Energy Services Limited N 5 million; Motel Ondo Plaza with over  N 10 million excluding continuous promotion, sustenance and maintenance of the project. Therefore, as promised at the launching, the project was branded with donor logos for donations above N 2. 5 million.

Three relevant trade cooperatives were invited as stakeholders:

  1. Ondo Welders and Iron Workers Association
  2. Ondo Carpenter and Furniture Union
  3. Nigerian Union of Tailors Ondo

The idea is to commercialize these Centers providing services to the trade groups in Ondo and environs, making available the state of the art machines for their usage, train the youths, design, manufacture as well as sell their products.

The Tailoring Center has the ODC, Youths and the Nigerian Union of Tailors Ondo as stakeholders.

The Wood Fabrication Center has the ODC, Youths and the Ondo Carpenter and Furniture Union as stakeholders.

The Metal Fabrication Center has the ODC, Youths, the Ondo Welders and Iron Workers Association, and the Olufosoye family as stakeholders.

Agreements were prepared to embrace the stakeholders for each Center and submitted to ODC for review, ratification and execution but there has been no response to date even though special sessions were held with presentations made to ODC.

During the waiting period, Motel Ondo Plaza was responsible for the skeletal staff, security and maintenance of the Centers.
